I found it quite entertaining when Avi Salzman suggested that oil stocks have become a bit mundane (“2 Natural-Gas Stocks That Will Benefit From Tightened Supply,” The Trader, Feb. 23). Watching Exxon Mobil and Chevron evolve from Standard Oil of New Jersey and California, respectively, witnessing their growth and increasing dividends over the span of decades has been a fascinating journey for me. If this journey is dubbed as “boring,” then I gladly embrace it.

The Reality Behind Economic Growth
Let’s consider this – consumer spending accounts for approximately 70% of our economy. As of the beginning of 2023, more than 64 million Social Security checks were dispersed with an 8.7% increase. With the average check seeing a $140 monthly bump, an extra $9 billion was injected into the economy every month. Additionally, numerous minimum wage workers saw significant pay raises—some even doubled—right at the start of 2023.
Given these circumstances, it’s no surprise that consumers are on a spending spree. The mystery seems to be unraveled.
