In a long-standing tradition, President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, took part in the annual lighting of the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse, located on the south side of the White House. The event, held in President’s Park, brought some holiday spirit to the U.S. capital.
A Great Tradition
As the lights illuminated the tree, President Biden wished everyone a Merry Christmas and expressed his admiration for this beloved tradition. He emphasized the joyful significance of the occasion.
The Grand Tree
This year’s magnificent tree, a 40-foot Norway spruce, hails from West Virginia’s Monongahela National Forest. Although there was a brief moment of uncertainty when strong winds toppled the tree earlier in the week, it was swiftly returned to an upright position. The National Park Service promptly replaced a cable that had secured the tree, ensuring its stability.
Cherished Ceremonies
The National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony is an eagerly anticipated event during the holiday season. The White House hosts this celebration annually, featuring a countdown and enchanting musical performances. The recently planted Norway spruce replaced an older tree affected by a fungal disease, causing its needles to wither and fall.
Preservation Efforts
Fortunately, none of the surrounding 58 smaller trees suffered damage from the previous incident. Although approximately 20 ornaments fell from the National Christmas Tree, no breakages occurred. In response, the National Park Service announced their plans to enhance the tree’s security with additional cables and installed concrete blocks.
A Star-Studded Affair
Country singer Mickey Guyton superbly hosted the ceremony while notable musicians Dionne Warwick, St. Vincent, Joe Walsh, Darren Criss, and others graced the stage with their performances. Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were also present at this remarkable event.
Unveiling Holiday Spirit
First Lady Jill Biden initiated Washington’s holiday season by revealing the White House’s festive decorations earlier in the week. She further extended the joy by inaugurating a holiday ice rink on the South Lawn, providing children with the opportunity to skate and play hockey throughout December.
