TotalEnergies (Paris:TTE) (LSE:TTE) (NYSE:TTE) and Borealis are pleased to announce the launch of their new Borstar® polyethylene (PE) unit at the Baystar joint venture in Bayport, Texas. With a production capacity of 625,000 metric tons per year, this state-of-the-art facility more than doubles the current output at Baystar’s site.
The completion of this $1.4 billion unit marks a significant milestone in the integrated petrochemicals venture between the two companies. It complements the expanded Bayport PE facility and the ethane cracker at the TotalEnergies Platform in Port Arthur, Texas.
Referred to as Bay 3, the new PE unit raises the total production capacity at the Baystar site to over one million tons per year, which includes two existing polyethylene production units. It is equipped with the cutting-edge proprietary Borstar® 3G technology, which is being licensed in North America for the first time. This technology enables the production of advanced value-added polymers that contribute to enhanced sustainability by facilitating lightweighting and the use of larger amounts of post-consumer recycled materials. These polymers find applications across various industries, including energy, infrastructure, and consumer products.
Bernard Pinatel, President of Refining & Chemicals at TotalEnergies, commented on the significance of this achievement, stating, “After the inauguration of the ethane cracker unit in Port Arthur last year, the start-up of the new PE unit is the second milestone of this joint venture aimed at establishing Baystar as a fully integrated U.S. petrochemical player. The fruition of this venture also advances TotalEnergies’ ambition to grow in the United States.”
Thomas Gangl, CEO of Borealis, emphasized the importance of this development in expanding their global presence and commitment to sustainable solutions. He stated, “The arrival of Borealis’ proprietary Borstar® technology in North America by way of Baystar marks, in line with our owners’ strategies, a crucial step for us in becoming a global leader in advanced and sustainable chemicals and material solutions. Expanding and deepening our footprint through Baystar enables us to better serve customers and partners by offering improved access to Borstar® based products produced right here in North America.”
TotalEnergies and Borealis anticipate that this expansion will not only enhance their market presence but also contribute to the growth and development of the United States’ petrochemical industry.
